Some school boards in the Vancouver area offer international education programs for students who come from overseas to study in Canada. This is popular with parents who want their child to learn English with native speakers or to earn a high school diploma that is recognized by universities and colleges throughout North America.

There are programs for students at the elementary and secondary school levels, but availability varies between school boards.

What Vancouver Area International Education Programs Offer

International education programs give international students the opportunity to study in the Canadian school system alongside regular Canadian students.

They study the standard academic subjects offered for their level and they get to participate in a number of extra-curricular activities. In addition, they receive intensive ESL (English as a Second Language) training and a specialized support program that includes advisors, administrators, and counsellors who are available to counsel students in both academic and non-academic matters.

Students who graduate from grade 12 under a Vancouver international education program also receive the standard British Columbia Graduation Diploma that all students who graduate receive. It is recognized by universities and colleges throughout North America.

The international educations program durations vary from school board to school board, but generally they allow students to take part for a semester, a full year or even several years. Some school boards also offer summer programs.

You can expect to pay upwards of $12,000CDN per year for your child to participate in an international education program in the Vancouver area. If you opt for a homestay for your child’s living accommodations, you can expect to pay around $750 – 800 per month on top of tuition fees depending on the individual program.
