Located in the southwest corner of mainland BC, the Great Vancouver regional district is the most densely populated region in the province and comprises 2,877 square kilometers. Governed by the body known as Metro Vancouver, there are 21 incorporated municipalities in Greater Vancouver. This includes the districts of Burnaby, Coquitlam, Richmond and West Vancouver to name a few.
Vancouver's downtown core has experienced one of the most significant amounts of growth in the city-it has more than quadrupled its population from 1981 to 2001.
Vancouver now has close to 600,000 people. The population grew by 5.9% from 2001 to 2006. At this rapid rate, the City of Vancouver expects the population of the downtown region to exceed 635,000 by the year 2021. Housing project plans are being developed to accommodate population growth beyond 2031.
